Question for Andre and Zack

Again on Beta 2 I could install Visual Basic 6.0, but was unable to install any service packs, as it says that I need MDAC 2.5, but even after installing MDAC 2.6 I still get the same message and the install of the service pack stops.
I sent a Beta report to Microsoft and for the second time I got back an answer that the report is changed to closed and won't fix.
Does this mean they won't fix it in this build or that Vista will not support Visual Basic 6.0?
Norm

Yeah, I guess it means its not supported in Windows Vista. You could try launching it in compatibility mode and see if it resolves this problem. Right click the IDE executable > click Properties > Compatibility > in the list box, select an appropriate version of Windows for this application Windows 2000 would be good.
If that does not work, try this recommendation, copy the contents of the VB disk to your hard disk, and rerun setup and reinstall. -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Also, you might want to check out the following link about Visual Basic 6.0 support in Vista: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vbrun/vistasupport.aspx -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

Andre,
Thanks for the information and reading the link you included it looks like they are supposed to support Visual Studio 6, but I still can't get Service Pack 5 to install.
The error says that I need a newer version of MDAC, but I have already installed MDAC 2.6. If I knew where it was looking I would move it there or change a registry setting.
Maybe someone else has solved this problem.
Thanks again, Norm "Andre Da Costa [Extended64]" wrote in message

Well if Microsoft's own program Visual Studio 6 is not going to be supported I guess I will quit on Vista and stay with Windows XP.
It does not make any sensed to me that Microsoft would not allow one of their own programs to install, since there are a lot of third party programs still out there that are written in Visual Basic, which is the program language I have used for a lot of years.
If I cannot install Visual Studio 6 then I cannot make sure my programs work correctly with Vista. and I will not support it.
Linux
is looking more and more like a very good alternative to Microsoft and maybe Debian as a programming language. I hesitate to switch to Visual Basic Net as you never know when Microsoft will pull the rug out from under that language, like they did with Visual Basic.

Actually, Debian is rather a Linux distribution than a programming language... ;)
Ciao, Andreas

I was just about to point that out Andreas. :) -- -- Andre Windows Connected | http://www.windowsconnected.com Extended64 | http://www.extended64.com Blog | http://www.extended64.com/blogs/andre http://spaces.msn.com/members/adacosta

A case of the brain having been in neutral at the time, I meant it to be Delphi, sorry for the confusion.
By the way I was able to get Service Pack 6 to install, but I will have to see what differences there is in this one.
